A years-old warning about facial recognition technology has resurfaced and gone viral on Chinese social media, sparking a wave of anxiety among netizens who now realize they may have exposed more than just their faces during online verification.
The hashtag "remember to wear clothes during facial recognition" trended heavily this week, with thousands of netizens expressing regret over their past behavior. Comments flooded in with users admitting they had completed facial recognition checks "while in bed", "on the toilet", or "half naked".

The renewed concern stems from a video originally posted in 2021 by Zhang Junping, a professor at Fudan University's College of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. In the video, which has recently been recirculated, Zhang warned users never to perform facial recognition while bathing or in states of undress.
"You really must wear clothes properly," Zhang said in the video. "The camera doesn't just see the circular area displayed on your screen — it captures the entire field of view. So don't do facial recognition when you're taking a shower."
According to Zhang, the circular frame shown on phone screens during facial verification is merely a "mask" to guide users. The back-end system actually receives the full image captured by the front-facing camera, which typically has a field of view wide enough to capture a user's upper body and surrounding environment.

The professor's video initially went viral upon release in 2021, drawing tens of thousands of interactions. It resurfaced again in 2024 and has now returned to public attention, demonstrating sustained public interest in privacy issues surrounding biometric technology.

In addition to the clothing warning, Zhang's video also explained why facial recognition systems often require users to perform actions like shaking their heads or opening their mouths — a feature many find inconvenient.
This "liveness detection" technology was developed primarily to prevent pension fraud, Zhang explained. "It started with pension insurance. When someone passed away, family members might continue collecting benefits by simply uploading a photo of the deceased," he said. "The best solution was to make people 'come alive' — moving their eyes, shaking their heads, opening their mouths — to prove they are living individuals".
