Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges | UNNC 2025 Disability Awareness Campaign is coming!
The 2025 Disability Awareness Campaign will take place from 1 – 6 December, coinciding with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December. The campaign aims to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities, raise awareness of the challenges they face, and promote a more inclusive, accessible, and equitable society.
Now in its seventh year, the campaign adapts the theme “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges.” This year’s focus is on promoting Universal Design for Learners (UDL) principles to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students, regardless of ability. Through a series of engaging activities, workshops, and events, we aim to challenge existing barriers, build empathy, and drive systemic change both on campus and in the wider community.
Four core events leading the way in inclusion
1. Symposium: The Inclusive Way Forward for Institutes of Higher Learning in China (in English)
2-3 December | Library Multi-function Room 01
The symposium serves as the academic cornerstone of this year's campaign. We have invited experts, scholars, university administrators, and student representatives from the Chinese mainland, the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, and other regions to explore the challenges and future of building inclusive campuses within China's higher education context.
This event provides a platform for intellectual exchange on inclusive education, charting the path forward for universities. The symposium is open to the public - off-campus participants are welcome to register by scanning the QR code at the end of this post.
2. Inclusive Art of Co-creative Tactile Book Exhibition
1-15 December | Public Area, 1st Floor, Library
Opening Ceremony: 1 Dec, 09:30 | Library Multi-function Room 01
A unique "Art Without Barriers" exhibition makes its grand debut! Using tactile art as a bridge, it provides a space for psychological healing for adolescents and offers a stage for people with disabilities to express themselves. This is not merely an art exhibition but a vivid practice of "reverse inclusion," allowing the sense of touch to become a bridge connecting hearts and minds.
The exhibition is jointly organised by UNNC, the Huamao Education Foundation, and the XU Wanmao Meiyu Public Welfare Foundation.
3. ?♂? Sports activity: "Touch the Light" - inclusive climbing
5 December, 14:00-16:00 | Sports Centre Climbing Wall
Visually impaired participants and sighted students will team up as climbing partners. Using a voice guidance system (direction, distance, and shape), they will collaborate to climb — experiencing the power of inclusive sports through trust and teamwork.
4. Joy Calculus Talk Show (in Chinese)
6 December, 13:30-15:30 | Library Multi-function Room 01
Break down stereotypes with laughter! The diverse members of the “Joy Calculus” amateur talk show group will present a unique open-mic session, sharing material drawn from their real-life experiences.
Through light-hearted and humorous storytelling, they will invite you to rethink the relationship between "disability" and "self," revealing the diversity and resilience of life.
More activities await your participation! Click on the image above to view the full event schedule.
About the Disability Awareness Campaign
UNNC's Disability Awareness Campaign has become an integral part of campus culture. We firmly believe that inclusion begins with understanding, and that action stems from awareness.
From co-creative art practices and cutting-edge academic discussions to personal stories shared through laughter, we look forward to joining you in driving change from diverse perspectives.
This December, let's meet on the UNNC campus — let's see, listen, and act together.
Let's break down invisible barriers and build bridges towards an inclusive future.
