Introduction
The question of whether historical sites should be entirely closed to the public or kept accessible for visitation has sparked intense academic and societal debate. While proponents of closure argue that such sites impose an excessive financial burden, my stance is that public access to heritage sites delivers far-reaching cultural and social value.
解析
? accessible adj.可到達(dá)的,可進(jìn)入的;
? proponent n. <正式> 支持者,建議者;
? far-reaching adj.影響深遠(yuǎn)的,波及廣泛的;
Body paragraph 1
Advocates of closing historical monuments focus on long-term preservation. Many historical structures and relics are extremely fragile and can be easily damaged by continuous human activities. Frequent foot traffic, physical contact, and careless behaviour such as graffiti or flash photography all contribute to irreversible deterioration. Valuable cultural heritage, without strict protection, might be lost forever. Besides, the exorbitant expenditure required for the conservation of historical structures could be reallocated to enhance public well-being. The preservation of ancient architectural heritage undeniably demands substantial financial investment, yet yields limited tangible benefits to the practical welfare of citizens, especially socio-economically disadvantaged groups. Accordingly, governments ought to prioritise financial allocations toward core public sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
解析
? advocate n. 擁護者,提倡者;
? fragile adj. 易碎的,易損的;
? graffiti n. 涂鴉,胡寫亂畫;
? flash photography 閃光燈攝影;
? irreversible adj. 不可挽回的,無法逆轉(zhuǎn)的;
? deterioration n. 惡化;
? exorbitant adj.(價格、要求等)過分的,離譜的;
? substantial adj. 大量的,價值巨大的;
? tangible adj. 明確的,真實的;
? prioritise vt. 給予……優(yōu)先權(quán);按優(yōu)先順序處理;
Body paragraph 2
However, in my personal estimation, notwithstanding the substantial short-term maintenance costs, opening historical sites to the public acts as a powerful catalyst for sustainable economic growth and comprehensive social progress. Only by maintaining the accessibility of such heritage landmarks to a multitude of domestic and international tourists can these sites serve as robust engines of national prosperity. To illustrate, the Palace Museum in Beijing, embodying profound cultural significance, attracts a vast number of global visitors each year. Such considerable influx of tourists strongly drives spending on accommodation, local cuisine and admission fees, generating a colossal amount of fiscal revenue for the country and stimulating the tourism industry. Furthermore, the expansion of the tourism sector creates a wide range of related employment opportunities, including professional tour guides, culinary practitioners and hospitality staff. As employment rates rise and residents attain stable livelihoods, social stability is inevitably strengthened.
解析
? notwithstanding prep. 雖然,盡管;
? catalyst n. 催化劑;
? accessibility n.(地方)易于進(jìn)入性;易使用性,可及性;
? a multitude of 大量的;許多的;
? robust adj. 強健的,強壯的;
? embody v. 具體表現(xiàn),體現(xiàn);
? a vast number of 大量的,許多的;
? influx n.(人或物的)大量涌入,大量流入;
? cuisine n. 烹飪,風(fēng)味;
? a colossal amount of 數(shù)量龐大的;
? fiscal revenue 財政收入;
? culinary adj. <正式> 烹飪的,食物的;
? practitioner n. <正式> 從事者,實踐者;
? inevitably adv. 不可避免地,必然地;
Conclusion
In brief, while closing historical sites may appear to conserve financial resources for immediate welfare programmes, it loses sight of their enduring economic and cultural significance. Personally, historical sites ought to remain open to the public, as not only do they safeguard intangible cultural heritage but also propel economic vitality and enhance collective well-being over the long haul.
解析
? lose sight of 忽略;
? intangible adj. 不可捉摸的;(資產(chǎn),利益)無形的;
? propel v. 推進(jìn),驅(qū)動;
? over the long haul 長期來看;
