Public Forum in Shanghai
Theme: Now, Here, with You.
The terrible news arrived. During a rehearsal break, one of the choir’s members was informed that her daughter had been killed in a shooting. The conductor announced the news to the choir; the music fell silent, and the air—which had once been filled with breath, music and laughter—was now thick with grief. Should they continue rehearing and sing on stage? Or should they disband immediately and then go home separately? The choir had to make a decision.
Swiss playwright Dominik Busch tells this story in his play The Choir (Der Chor), based on the real-life shooting that occurred during a music festival in 2001, in which the Lucerne Choir was performing. Through a multi-voiced narrative, he explores the individual grief following a collective trauma—one rooted in systemic injustice and human violence—while examining how we confront evil and find the strength to endure.
This March, Dominik Busch will meet with Chinese theatre enthusiasts in Shanghai and Nanjing. On 22 March, at the Theatre YOUNG in Shanghai, he will join theatre creator Lu Changting and One-way Street Journal editor-in-chief Wu Qi to share creative philosophy and reflections on the relationship between theatre and the contemporary world: What has been the response to The Choir among audiences in German-speaking regions? How do Chinese audiences and readers perceive this text? Why does One-way Street Journal persist in publishing plays? With so many storytelling mediums available today, why do we still need theatre? What kind of theatre do today’s audiences need? And so on.
“And breathe in and out. And trust you. A world. One last time, just this once: now, here, with you.” Dominik Busch penned this monologue in The Choir. On 22 March, at the Theatre Young in Shanghai, we look forward to a rendezvous, ‘now, here, with you’, to rebuild our trust in you and me, in theatre, and in the world.
This event is part of the project "This Time, Once Again: Believe in Theatre", supported by Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia Shanghai, Goethe-Institut Beijing, with venue support provided by Theatre YOUNG.
