據中國地震臺網正式測定，3月3日12時56分在印尼蘇門答臘島北部海域發生6.1級地震，震源深度10公里，震中位于北緯2.05度，東經96.65度。
震中300公里范圍內有5座大中城市，最近為實武牙(錫博爾加)（Sibolga），距震中約240公里。震中5公里范圍內平均海拔約-256米。
